Final entry dates loom for enterprise competition

The country’s most business-friendly areas have been told that there are only a few weeks left in which to enter a competition to find the UK’s enterprise hotspot for 2008.

The Enterprising Britain awards recognise those areas of enterprise excellence from across the UK that have helped transform the social and economic fortunes of their communities.

The competition is run by Make Your Mark on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform in partnership with the Regional Development Agencies.

There are, however, only weeks to go before the regional heats of Enterprising Britain 2008 close. The dates for entries vary according to country and region, ranging from the 18 April in Scotland and the South East to the 9 May in the East Midlands.

Launching the competition, Shriti Vadera, Minister for Business and Competitiveness, said: “Enterprise, especially small businesses, start-ups and growing companies are the heart of the UK’s economy.

“I support this grass-roots campaign, which identifies and celebrates the regions where enterprise has created jobs, brought communities together and made a real difference to local business and local people.”

One of the judges for 2008 is entrepreneur Peter Jones.

Mr Jones said of the awards: “As an Enterprising Britain judge, I have been extremely impressed by the strength, determination and innovative thinking demonstrated by those people who have used enterprise to transform the social and economic fortunes of their community.

“The Enterprising Britain competition is a great chance for enterprise success stories from across the UK to shine.”

Date:28 March 2008
